The mighty band wagon of We will Rock you is in town for one week only, Will it lift the roof off the massive Capital FM Arena Nottingham or will the stage be too big to showcase the true magic of Queen and the story the cast have to tell?

Looking around the arena which can hold up to a staggering 10,000 thousand screaming fans looked very disappointing with large sections of the arena cornered off and many seats and sections hardly sold so the atmosphere wasn’t as electric as hoped. With Capital FM Arena in a last attempt to try and fill the arena giving out free tickets via Twitter (which actually is annoying when people like ourselves pay full price)  but It didn’t seem to make much of a difference in my eyes, so the show must go on …or would have been massively better  if it had gone to a smaller venue such as the Royal Concert Hall or even cut down the amount of shows on the tour at the arena from two weeks to one week, so more people would be jammed back in the one week.

Now that the show did get under way and the lights went out for the people that where in the crowds were ready to rock, so a musical which is based on the music of Queen and a story by Ben Elton set in the future it tells a story of a group known as the Bohemians who have been attempting to restore live music in a time where everyone dresses the same and also thinks the same. The Bohemians plan to free everyone’s mind to restore once forgotten sounds and thoughts of the past , Rock music is something of the past and is no more which had been killed off over time by pop music and Radio Blah Blah because they live in a time where it is forbidden to use musical instruments and to be a composer of music.

Globalsoft Corporation held by a powerful woman known as ‘Killer Queen’, they have changed music and have brain washed everyone in to liking a certain type of music. Everyone has to obey the orders given out to them by Globalsoft Corporation, Earth had been renamed as iplanet and everything and everyone is controlled by Globalsoft Corporation , which means the clothes you wore, the music you listened to and even your thoughts where all under Globalsoft’s power.

Galileo a young boy becomes somewhat of a outcast because he can hear dreams and thoughts in his head of lyrics from forgotten music of the past which he doesn’t understand and know why he is having these thoughts and dreams. Everything makes no sense to him and this lead to him, just to start singing ‘I want to Break Free‘. His action do not go unnoticed and is soon captured by the commander of Globalsoft police lead by Khashoggi. Another member of the same school also doesn’t follow the same path as everyone else known a young woman (Who would be later known as Scaramouche) was arrested by the Khashoggi because she was a young goth dressed girl, not like the rest of the Ga Ga Girls of her class, and that she listened to computer generated music which lead to them to mocking her allowing, her to roll into song of ‘Somebody to Love’

Galileo and Scaramouche would then escape from Khashoggi and Globalsoft and head for ‘the place of the living rock’ which they would be lead there by a ‘bright star’ this would show them the way so they can seek out the hidden instruments and take down Globalsoft’s made pop music, before that they bumped into a group of Bohemians also on the same mission as them each of these members had famous singers names such as David Bowie , Michael Jackson and Britney Spears but Globalsoft found their hideout and captured everyone and once again tried to brain wash them which lead them all to an old pub known as a Seven Seas of Rye, which was where all the lost souls went who tried to escape from the Globalsoft Corparation.

Where would this bright star lead our duo after once again escaping the jaws of the Corparation? What would be there when they reached it? For Galileo and Scaramouche they would need the help of each other to continue their journey and unlock the hidden instrument of Rock (which of course is an Electric Guitar!)
The story was set out really well with moments of the story being sung to us by the two lead actors Galileo and Scaramouche while the rest where sung by Globalsoft’s Khashoggi and leader Killer Queen. Each of the songs had very different vocals some of which you could sing-a-long to and enjoy enjoy, while others you don’t really get into because of how different the vocals sounded to the original version of the song.

Most of the scenes which took place within or around the characters in Globalsoft had lots of lights and colours and big screens and effects taking place, but as for the songs when by themselves during these acts

didn’t really had as big a impact as the stage itself. While we followed the adventures of  Galileo and Scaramouche each of their scenes didn’t have much going it and it was a case of just a black background and more focus on their voices, which I have to say was very impressive in parts, so that might be the reason for the less distracting backdrops during their performances.

With the audience not really getting involved even on the big songs of the night it just felt like everything would have been better on a smaller scale. An arena tour is just too big for some productions, and especially one focusing on intimate singing, this felt like it needed a tighter closer stage and more audience feeling.  However it was an enjoyable event, but again everything would have been better in a smaller venue , because some of the songs where ruined by the odd vocals from some of the cast members, and the lack of quality to back parts of the arena ruined things. Fans of Queen will still enjoy it like i did, but for pure song adrenalin and vocal prowess I would suggest going to see a dedicated Queen Tribute act in a smaller venue. All in all if you want to have a enjoyable evening with memorable songs, and willing to get involved that little bit, when others around you may not be, then go see We Will Rock You. (On a personal note Brian May came out the night before we went to see the performance as he only did the opening night which was a shame but a member of the tour band looked like him from where we was sat with his long grey hair so I wouldn’t of been none the wiser).

Good – Singing | Dancing | Acting

Bad – Stage Too Small | Arena Too Big | Wrong Venue Choice For A Intimate Singing Production
