I’ve been waiting for Portobello to open for some time and now the time has come to experience it for myself.

Based on Carlton Hill, Carlton which is on the main road which leads to Nottingham City Centre, and is also a stones throw from Arnold, Mapperley and surrounding Gedling areas, so this is truly in a great location to get to no matter where you are coming from within and around Nottingham.

For our visit, we wasn’t able to book as the website only allowed to book after 17:30, that was fine as I did phone ahead of our visit, the person we spoke to on the phone said it was a first come first served for the cafe area at the time of our visit which was 14:00.

When we arrived we were greeted by a member of the staff who asked us if we booked, which explained we didn’t (or couldn’t) and the member of staff asked us to sign in and use track and trace, plus sanitize our hands, that we did and we were taken to our table.

What can I say, the place looked spotless and was so inviting which had great atmosphere, it was like we were transported to somewhere else, something that you would expect to see in a bar or cafe at West Bridgeford or somewhere up market, but no this was in Carlton.

It’s great to see a nice new venue in Carlton somewhere to enjoy a nice bite to eat to start your evening if you’re heading watch a performance at the Top Spot Club nearby or to finish your night after a long day in the office when heading home from town.

It was really nice to see the place busy and full of people smiling, talking and enjoying good company, this is something that it seems everyone has missed for sometime, getting back to what we once had and may have taken for granted.

Let’s talk about the menu; there was quite a lot of things on the menu which I will be interesting in trying which gives me a reason to visit again, that being said I have already booked my next visit at the time of writing this. The menu includes pastas, pizzas, burgers just to name a few plus a selection of teas, cakes and desserts so there is something for everyone and for any occasion.

We ordered a tea for two, which came out with a nice clean white tea pot, this gave you enough for two full cups of tea each, unlike most places which barely have enough water in them to pour two cups of tea, and we decided to order some pasta dishes.

The food was piping hot, tasty and well presented, and arrived in good time from ordering, the staff did everything they could to make our visit enjoyable by asking if everything was ok with the food and were quick to respond when asked for the bill even with a full/busy restaurant.

Speaking about the staff, they were on the ball when it came it making sure everyone is safe and following government guidelines, making sure that people signed in or used track and trace, plus making sure they sanitized their hands and people had face masked.

Whilst we were sat down eating, one woman with her family attempted to enter the restaurent and said she booked a table but forgot her face mask, the woman said it would take her 10mins to get home to pick it up and the staff stuck to their guns and said she needed to have her face mask, unsure if the woman went over the road to the store called Savers to purchase a mask but if I was the staff I would of said they sell them in Savers over the road, think the woman was just hoping the member of staff would back down and let her off without wearing a mask.

All in all great visit and can’t wait to visit again many more times in the future.

James
