Here’s a look at 13 must see films that are coming out this year in 2013 at the cinema.
I’ve tried to include a a mix, but it looks like the action side of me has taken over my list (no real horrors which is surprising for me!). I have bypassed a few blockbusters, but included them in a small list at the bottom of my 13 picks.
Have a read and see what you think. In no specific order.
RockerJarvis’ 13 Films To Watch in 2013
Alan Partridge : Alpha Papa
This is great. Being a big fan of the multiple Alan Partridge TV shows, I remember the likes of watching Knowing Me, Knowing You when i was younger just before bed, I’m very very pleased that at last, Partridge has his movie that his fans will be overjoyed about. Throughout the years of watching Alan Partridge, there are numerous jokes, gags, and one liners that everyone i know quote. To a UK audience, Alan Partridge was massive, and i hope that it will continue here with his film, that we get all the running gags, and new ones to boot. I’ll be pleased especially if they throw a few jokes for the fans of previous shows, just to show some loyalty to the viewer. Just one quote to remember like ‘”lynn we have to get out of here! they’re sex people!” i will be happy, but im sure there will be numerous quotes to take from this for years to come. I’d been happy with another 6 part mini series, but this will do very nicely. By the looks of this trailer everything looks great, and how it should be. Most of the regulars are back, Alan has a big more hair, and Lynn has ALOT more hair in places, and all this is played on, so this will be a hit, even if its just in my book. The general plot When Alan’s radio station, North Norfolk Digital, is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a hilarious chain of events which see Alan having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege., oh and they want to rename Norfolk Digital to Shape! Noooooo! By the looks of things from the trailer, this will be the least of their worries! GREAT STUFF!!!!!
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
I can not wait for the return of Ron Burgundy, no wait that’s already been done hasn’t it, the return return of Ron Burgundy and his crew. I like Will Ferrells comedy, not as big as some people, but him as Ronald Joseph Aaron “Ron” Burgundy in Anchorman is a joy to the senses. I’m a massive fan of Paul Rudd though, and love all his work, his comedy is pure in nearly all parts, and i find him as an actor excellent. He is in my top 5 actors of the last 10 years. Steve Carrell has gone onto strength to strength in recent years as well, so here hoping that the actor will not overtake the character, in the sense that due to Carrell being a big draw, they will overuse him. He should not be over used, as Brick is used best in small doses. David Koechner back as Champ is always a great welcome too, as actor in many a wasted comedy, but his style works here. The trailer released at the end of last year was just a teaser, but boy did it get the juices running, and the most recent trailer, now showing what the general gist of the story looks exactly what fans would be wishing. The team down in the dumps but looking to reemerge once more as THE NUMBER ONE NEWS TEAM. THE BOYS ARE BACK! Get ready for all out laughs, and remember 60% of the time, this film will be awesome every time!
OK so only a teaser has been released, and one at less than a minute, however the more you read into ‘The Counselor’ the more you should be interested. You have the actors (Pitt, Fassbender, Bardem, Cruz, Diaz) and you have the director in Ridley Scott. This could be an absolute gem. The story here is that a lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking. That’s it so far, and considering this is a teaser, i’ll leave it at that.
I’ve got a funny feeling that this could be good. Very good. There hasn’t been a bad Denzel film in my book, in most cases he puts on a classy performance, and takes what ever role he needs to do to the limit. He is a very good method actor too, and when he wants to be he has that comedic touch which is going to be needed here against Wahlberg. The back and forth rapport between him and MarkieMark should be intriguing to watch. Talking about Mr Wahlberg, he can be on the flip side. Some of his films have been terrible, however i lay that down to the scripts, as i enjoy him as an actor in most roles he does, and he’s shown from the start of his actor career to now, that he has diverse, if a little wooden at times, acting range. However here i think he will shine, even more so that Denzel. 2 GUNS really could be the sleeper hit of this year, with these two actors playing under cover agents on a bank heist, where neither know the other man was also an undercover agent. I look forward to this very much.
A great cast, and a film that will certainly pull the heart strings. May have already revealed the ‘abductor’ in the trailer when considering the characters names (so possible spoiler below). Could be a hard movie to watch, Has all the right people in the right places (actors, directors, screen play) This could financially fail in the cinema, due to the story itself, about missing children, which a lot of people will stray from, even if its a great film. I hope its not the case, as from the initial trailer, this could be a gripping couple of hours.
Here’s another Paul Rudd film I’m looking forward too. Another chance for him to showcase his diverse acting abilities, along with the impressive Emile Hirsch, who also has, over his last few films (with the exception of 1 or 2) been impressive. Its always good when you get two competent actors on screen, and know that with the right script, that the duration of the will fly by, and i can see that this will be one of those films. An interesting looking Independent Film, with a very (very) small cast, that’s had a good response since its Festival Run at the start of the year, I’m hoping this will come to a selected cinema soon. The film is, quite simply, about an odd couple (<<<that’s the gem of the story here) sent to the centre of a country highway, that’s been ravaged by wildfire, to repaint traffic lines!? with hi jinx and back and forth exchanges along the way (the chemistry between Rudd and Hirsch should be great). What more could you ask for.
Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters
I’m quietly looking forward to this. I had reservations when i was about the watch the original, but i enjoyed it. Its certainly a family film with a mystical and fantasy story, which will be of interest to the younger audience, as well as the older viewer. This should look great on a scale of epic proportions, and considering how over the top the original was, i see this as no different. We have all those Greek gods characters that we remember being told about as a child in stories when being put to bed, here on the big screen once again, and here we see how someone envisions it from the original literature. This time round in order to restore their dying safe haven, the son of Poseidon and his friends head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece. Look out for various demigods, Zeus, and maybe some mentions or flashbacks of Poseidon and Hades. Again this should be a great movie for the whole family, and i see no reason why even an older viewer that this movie may not be aimed for, wont enjoy it just as much either. Fun family movie.
This is a film that will obviously get shunned by critics. Im sure most will run this down to the ground. But personally, on the recently released trailer, it looks like how i would want a prison film starring Rocky and Terminator to be! Seriously, Arnie and Sly are always great together. They are real action men! The muscles, the mouth, the persona. They always put on a good show, and this looks no different. Here we have an action thriller about a structural engineer being imprisoned in a prison of his own design, and aided with the help of his inmates to escape. OK so its basically Prison Break season 1 in a near two hour movie form. Its seems very very similar in every sense, from the story to the characters, which could cause issues from critics, as they will compare so much to Prison Break, however Season 1 of Prison Break was the best, so whats not to like about a 70 million dollar budgeted film basically about PB Season 1. Here’s hoping it doesn’t get run down too early, and i hope people just go in with an open mind, and just enjoy an action movie.
You know sometime you just like to have a laugh, and that’s why i think Delivery Man might tick all the right boxes. Vince Vaughan is back again, and even though a few of his recent films haven’t been his best, this one looks like it could be back up there in the sweet spot. It tells the story of An affable underachiever who finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them file a lawsuit to reveal his identity. Just the idea behind this sounds ludicrous, so it should be in there for the making of something very funny. Throw in the mix Chris Pratt, who i have enjoyed in Parks and Rec lately, and im hoping they should play off each other quiet well. The rest of the cast looks quiet sparse but that’s not to say they can’t do the job they are asked. It may not bring the crowds, but who ever does show up, i hope leaves laughing.
Cheese cheese cheese cheese. Everything about this film seems so cheesy. Maybe its the District 9 influence that it making it hard for me, as that was so good, seeing it here just looks like a copy, but that’s what the director is from so he has the right to keep going back to that world. The trailer especially even though looking gorgeous, also looks like a layer of cheese added onto. That’s not to say i don’t want to watch it, as i do, I enjoy Damon in most of his films, and Foster is good too, so im sure they will do solid here. We have an interesting set up with the poor living on ravaged Earth, and the Rich on a place called Elysium (Elysium mean Underworld in Greek Mythology) This film will touch a lot on the likes of poverty, political and Scientology themes, and im sure it loads will be left unexplained, but i still see this film being excellent, if just very straight forward. Im sure it will go, Poor man, something happens to friend, needs to go up to rich place for help, needs help to get there, go to underworld to get help, travels there as a machine, fights big bad corp, wins, comes back to ravaged Earth, him winning changes everything for everyone is happy. I hope that’s not the case, and that this film turns dark, it has the opportunities to really take a different turn for normal Hollywood story telling, and maybe just have the big corp win, and destroy everything in its path, but obviously that wont happen.
Here is another film that, depending on the day of the critic, could do well or could bomb. I fancy this being in between, some people will enjoy this, some will compare it with many another film, and some will down right hate it just due to the fact that a singer is the main actor. Not being a fan of Timberlakes music, i’ve seen him in a few films, and i think he does a fine job. He knows whats asks for him, and he does just that. He also brings in a bit of pulling audience power with his legion of fans. Its not just JT who is here, we also have the likes of Ben Affleck, Anthony Mackie, and Gemmer Arterton also starting. Producer credits also include Leonardo DiCaprio who could put in interesting spin on things. I again like the sound of Runner Runner, its about s a Princeton student (JT) is cheated out of his tuition money by playing online poker. He learns that the site is hosted from a remote island location, and goes to confront the site’s corrupt owner (Affleck), but is lured into becoming the owners protégé and right-hand man, while an FBI agent, tries to use the newly recruited student to bring down the sites owners. Im interested.
The Wolf Of Wall Street
There are a few actors and directors who work together perfectly. We have director Martin Scorsese working with Leonardo DiCaprio again (previously worked together on the likes of Gangs Of New York, The Departed, Shutter Island etc) and this time in a biographical black comedy based on the memoir of Jordan Belfort. DiCaprio plays Jordon, a New York stockbroker, who refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case. Just from the initial trailer released in June, DiCaprio look to be on absolute form. His quirks, his mannerisms, just his pure acting look spot on for what they are asking for here. From the 3 or so minutes of footage shown so far, this certainly looks like it could be another hit under the ScorseseCaprio belt. Throw in the likes of Johan Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bernthat and Jon Favreau, and we could certainly be on for a very late contender for film of the year when this is released in December 2013. I look forward to this, just to see DiCap back at his best!
Ok ok, so this will get destroyed in the cinema im sure, both financially and by critics. People are already getting negative over this movie, which in my eyes is a little unfair. You have the likes of Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, who both have pulling power for the audience, and acting ability in most areas second to none. Both can pull off action, both can pull of comedy, and both can pull of heart. This films looks to have 2 out of those 3 in abundance, so i see know reason why this can’t be an easy summer hit later this year. I understand the comic book fans will be going crazy over who has been cast as their favourite characters, but the comic is simple and to the point, and at the end of the day, was only a 4 part mini series in the late 90’s anyway, so they should be at least a little happy they have a fully fledged movie coming out, that could revive the series as a whole. In my eyes, i think considering the way their characters act in the comics, they have done pretty well with the case here. There will be comparisons with Men In Black, and so there should be, as there are, but this was also spoke about when the comics came out too, so the series as a whole is used to that too. The general plot it, a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Simple, enjoyable, and interesting enough for 90 minutes. I see no reason why this cant be an enjoyable flick and nothing else.
Some extra obvious titles to look forward to (trailers available online)
Kickass 2, Snowpiercer, Pain And Gain, Thor: The Dark World, The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug. Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim, The Heat
Gravity, Machete Kills, Frozen, Free Birds, The Wolverine, Enders Game, Only God Forgives, Captain Phillips, Carrie
Red 2, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, Grown Ups 2, Turbo, The Conjuring, White House Down, Hell Baby,
Here’s a four special mentions, no trailers released yet.
I’m very interested about this one. I’m really not sure how this one is going to go down. Being a fan of the original makes me skeptical, however, this could also be very good. Whats not to say every now and then, that the america remake is better that the foreign original. We’ve had it before, and it could be here again. I have no issues with how is playing the lead in Josh Brolin, but only the fact that i feel he is a little old, especially considering the plot of the story, and what actually happens. However his current age is perfect for the present part of the story, so will a little ‘Men In Black’ makeup, it should be fine. In case you’re not aware of the original, An advertising executive is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. I recommend seeing the 2003 original South Korean film Oldboy beforehand for comparisons.
Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack. This is a Tom Clancy film, and should be good again. The solid Chris Pine in the lead, with help from the likes of Kevin Coster, and Keira Knightly, it should be a fun ride. Don’t forget that Jack Ryan is actually an ongoing character, who has been played in 4 different films, by different actors. He was played in The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear And Present Danger, and The Sum Of All Fears. All films have done well commercially and critically, and with everyone involved here, i see no different.
Homefront is an upcoming action-thriller directed by Gary Fleder. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Logan and was adapted into a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. It stars Jason Statham, James Franco, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth. The film is set to be released nationwide in theaters on November 27, 2013. The film was originally planned to be released in 2014.
Phil Broker (Statham), a low level DEA agent sees his quiet family life turned upside down when his path crosses with a band of drug traffickers, led by Gator (Franco), a meth kingpin.
Hell and Back
Not much has been released about this animated film just yet. It stars the voices of Mila Kunis, Danny McBride, Susan Sarandon, and Jennifer Coolidge to name a few. The plot is about Remy, Augie, and Curt who are on summer vacation from community college, trying to save up for their dream pad by working at a local Carnival. When Curt reveals the failing park is going to close, Remy seeks out the resident fortune teller to find a quick fix to their predicament. The Blood Oath of Beelzebub may actually be more than they bargained for, and when Curt immediately breaks the oath, he’s dragged kicking and screaming into the depths of Hell.
This looks to be an adult comedy animation, more than likely in the same vein as the Robot Chicken animation, and especially with the likes of McBride involved it should be a laugh.
