There have been songs about breaking up in small towns, but what about when it happens in a big city?

Surrey-born singer-songwriter Beth Keeping releases ‘Strangers in the Same City’ about what it feels like to end a relationship in a place like London, which can feel both huge and tiny at the same time.

The single – the second release from her upcoming EP – is an upbeat but emotive pop-country track that navigates the complexity of feeling connected to someone you are no longer connected to.
Keeping wrote the song after she moved from Woking to London and began dating outside of her social circle. She says: “With today’s dating websites and apps, there’s often no link between you and the person you’re seeing other than the city that you live in. I wanted to convey the feeling of knowing that when it ends you’ll probably never see them again, but there’s equally a chance that you’ll bump into them tomorrow in a coffee shop or getting off the tube.”

The accompanying music video very simply follows Beth as she walks around London carrying a red balloon. “I wanted to showcase London’s beauty and vibrancy, but also suggest how easy it is to be in a city of 8 million people and still feel alone. The single balloon is partly a symbol of that loneliness, but I’ve had balloons in all of my music videos so far, so I thought why not make it a thing?!”

The track was recorded and produced in Nashville by Tommy Harden, who makes up one half of country duo Lost Hollow. Tommy’s stunning counterpart male vocal adds a further layer to the song, hinting at another side of the story.

This is just the start for the rising singer-songwriter, who will release her debut EP ‘Fool’ on 20th April 2018. She is holding a launch night at the London venue Zigfried von Underbelly on 30th April, and will follow up with a May tour around the UK, to be announced shortly. You can pre-order her EP on iTunes now.
